Bettina and I listened to car talk on NPR each morning on the way to our long runs during the marathon training. Last week we had the chance to meet the hosts of the show on the hill.  What a treat! See pictures. See the Car Talk website.

go nats!

One of the coolest things I've done in DC lately is go to the home opener game for the DC Washington Nationals on 4/14/2005. DC has been without a home team for over 30 years and with a team back in town everyone has baseball fever! President Bush threw the first pitch, we all got medallions, and many of the old Senators were present.  The stadium was full, and RFK looked great.  Mike and I, in true form, met yet another famous somebody.  We ran smack dab into DC Police Chief Charles Ramsey. Due to security the 5th level ran out of hotdogs.  The first beer guy we found, in our season seats, was the exact same beer guy (with a thick Boston accent) that served us and hung out at the last game of the Orioles/Red Sox in October of last year Danny, Brian, Julian and I attended.  So cool! See some pictures here. See an article about the game here.

little bits of wisdom

good philosophy
When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the beer.

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was. So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a more hesitant "yes." The professor then produced two cans of beer from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.

Now," said the professor, as the laughter subsided, "I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things - your family, your children, your health, your friends, and your passions, things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full."

"The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house, your car. The sand is everything else - the small stuff. "If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued, "there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. "Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness.

Play with children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your partner out to dinner. Do some more laps. There will always be time to clean the house, and fix the garden. Take care of the golf balls first, the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand." One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the beer represented.

The professor smiled. "I'm glad you asked," he said. "It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of beers.

inauguration 2005

a classically dc affair

Regardless of your political views and voting history, you can't help but respect and admire the democratic process in the United States. This process is embodied by the peaceful transfer (or in this case renewal) of power to government leaders.  In light of this, I attended as many events as possible during inauguration week to enjoy my fair share of free food and booze in honor of democracy.  Beginning with the Grand Hispanic Gala on Wednesday we finished that evening off by sneaking into the North Carolina State Society Ball.  After a few hours of sleep, I bundled up for the Swearing-In Ceremony.  I then followed the crowd and watched some of the Parade.  Finally we attended the Liberty Ball and then cruised over to the Texas and Wyoming Ball where I practically ran into Donald Rumsfeld.  Be prepared for a good laugh when you see that picture! All in all, we had a wonderful time with a great group of friends! If you ever get the chance to do it, I recommend it! Also check out the the latest JibJab cartoons, especially "It's Good To Be In DC" and "Second Term".

i am utterly and totally addicted to frienster...

won't you sign up and be my friend...

Worth Caring About

the best entrepreneurial adventure yet...

I am a total sucker for the American Dream.  I love to hear about ways that people are living it, especially when it involves the entrepreneur.   This article reminded me that even if the idea is far fetched, it is still worth shooting for the stars (please allow me the cheesy metaphor).

thomas jefferson muzzle awards

Many of you know that censorship is a "close to my heart" issue. Earlier this year, I mentioned that CBS was in the wrong because they denied moveon.org the right to air a commercial during the super bowl.  Someone agreed with me: the Thomas Jefferson Center for the Protection of Free Expression. Every April 13th they award Thomas Jefferson muzzles to the worst free speech offenders of the past 365 days.  I might add that CBS has appeared 3 times in the last decade.  See their honored recipients here.

censorship

As I watched the super bowl, I was pleasantly surprised at the ads, many of which were funny and entertaining. That is, until I read this news piece.  Don't get me wrong, moveon.org is not my cut of tea, but I do want the right to see the ad and make a decision for myself.

The Marathon

Well, betty and I did finish and we certainly had fun for most if the race.  Miles 11 - 20 were the hardest, but the journey was amazing. The course was beautiful and we had great weather. Saint Valentine Poems...

on a cynical day

My feelings for you no words can tell
Except for maybe "Go To Hell."

Roses are red, violets are blue, sugar is sweet, and so are you.
But the roses are wilting, the violets are dead, the sugar bowl's empty and so is your head.

Love may be beautiful, love may be bliss
But I only slept with you, because I was pissed.

I thought that I could love no other
Until, that is, I met your brother.

What inspired this amorous rhyme?
Two parts vodka, one part lime.
